The cinema of Jacques Demy renders a world; a world of port cities (Nantes, Nice, Cherbourg, Rochefort, Los Angeles, Marseille), criss-crossed by amorous comings and goings, where the imagination travels at impossible velocity. Eighteen movies that the director desired all to be "linked one to the other." Pop-human-comedy, haunted by a host of enchanted characters who materialize within the frame with meticulous precision, caught in the geometric net of a strictly delineated staging that makes Demy (1931-1990) one of the greatest perfectionists of French cinema, and one of the very few to examine the musical future of the seventh art.

The cinematographic universe of Jacques Demy consists of fairground performers, labourers, eccentric twins, quixotic artists, television salesmen and even the Lilac fairy. He is one of these magical filmmakers that has kept his childhood intact, continuing to draw his creative energy from it throughout his life. An insatiable power of sublimation, equally present in his drawing (from the forties), in his photography and in his painting (during the eighties), which the exhibition reveals for the first time alongside previously unseen shots of his partner Agnès Varda, and the work of his closest collaborators. Of particular note are the musical creations of Michel Legrand (his "brother in cinema") and the wild gouaches of art director Bernard Evein.
